We have had a wonderful summer with your students and hope that they have too! These past five weeks have gone by very fast for us, as our days have been packed pretty full with a blend of learning and fun. We wanted to provide you with a summary of the past five weeks so you know everything that your student participated in!
Social and emotional learning- The basis of SYC is Connection. We focus on the social and emotional learning, or connectedness of students first. Every day starts with breaking up into small groups and doing a fun and cooperative teambuilding game that helps students build relationships with their peers and their group leader. We know that new groups are difficult, and making new friends is challenging, but we have seen so many students make new connections this summer. With that, we hope that every student has left feeling a stronger sense of belonging here at SYC and SMS, and start the school year with a little more confidence knowing that they have a community here.
Additionally, students participated in an advisory planning program where they were able to give input into activities being planned for the SMS student body for the school year advisory program which is aimed at connecting students with their peers and adults in the building.
STEM & College and Career Planning- Students were able to find careers related to their interests, research said careers, and learn about what it takes to get there, including what type of degree is required, and colleges where they can obtain the degree. The platform used for this research is Virtual Job Shadow. Additionally, students learned how to write checks and started to think about how to budget the money they received from their choice career!
Students were also able to travel to two colleges this summer for tours and q&a where students caught a glimpse of college life, and the habits they should start building now for their future academics and careers. These included New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) and Great Bay Advanced Technology Center. Lastly, our field trips to the McAulliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and the NH Historical Society provided students a glimpse into the careers of space exploration and historians.
First Responder Academy- Students learned first-hand about careers as a law enforcement officer, fire fighter, and EMT thanks to School Resource Officer Ashley Fuller. Through two presentations and multiple field trips, students received an in-depth look at the careers of first responders. Students traveled to the State of NH Police Academy, Somersworth Fire Department, Strafford County Department of Corrections, American Ambulance, and Somersworth Police Department.
Literacy- A major goal of the summer program is to reduce the “summer slide”, the statistical trend of students falling behind on their literacy skills over the summer weeks. Through our unique partnership with Title 1, students were able to explore graphic novels, books on human rights, and Reader’s Theatre play booklets over all five weeks, as well as receive free books to take home.
Garden and Food Science Education- Students walked to the SYC Plant for Growth Garden and the SYC/SMS Garlic Beds each week where they learned how to plant, grow, maintain, harvest, and cook with vegetables and herbs. Though some students were reluctant at first, every student participated in a number of projects at the garden, including the crucial harvesting step of our annual Garlic Project. Our garden based learning program continues to be successful due to the valued partnership with Farm to School. ***continued on back
Recreation- We know that one of the main reasons students want to come to SYC Summer is because they know how much fun we have! Although we always have a fun twist to everything that we do, we also spend a lot of time allowing the kids to let loose in recreational activities. These activities include our Thursday field trips to White Lake and Hampton Beach, Tuesdays at the Dover Pool, our daily sport activities outside or in the gym, and our “Game Zone” where students can choose from ping pong, pool, puzzles, board games, friendship bracelets, etc, and our last field trip to Sky Zone Trampoline Park!
Signed, the SYC Family- We look forward to the school year!
