Students Bake for Change

         Throughout the year students at SYC are involved in engaging community service projects. Every April right around Earth Day they participate in a community clean up day called Spirit-Up Somersworth, where over 300 people participate each year. Over the summer the students plant, grow, and harvest a community garden that not only beautifies the Bartlett Avenue community, but also feeds families via the Somersworth Food Pantry. This fall SYC students have also made blankets and hats to be donated, as well as helped raise over 25 full Thanksgiving meals. 

 

 

        One of the most recent service projects has been the Baking for Change club, where students get to learn how to perfect the art and science of baking, while making a difference. The bulk of the product from this club has been donated to the food pantry and community events.

 

        The item that students were most excited about making was not quite for human consumption however. In December students baked a special batch of Holiday treats for the dogs over at Cocheco Valley Humane Society. They hoped that their treats would bring some holiday cheer to dogs who could use it, naughty or nice. 

 


        The saga continues through January and February, where students will not only learn to bake, but will compete to create the most dazzling and delicious cupcakes in the new Cupcake Wars club! Check our facebook to for photos soon! @somersworthyouth
